27. OnDeath 죽음에 대하여

Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."
And he said:

그러자 이번에는 알미트라가 말했다.

"이제 저희는 죽음에 대해 묻고자 합니다."
그리고 그가 답했다.

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day
cannot unveil the mystery of light.

그대들은 죽음의 비밀을 알고 싶어한다.
하지만 너희가 생명의 중심속에서 죽음을 찾지 않는다면

어떻게 그것을 찾을 수 있으리오.
밤의 영역만 볼 수 있는 눈을 가진 올빼미는
낮동안에는 눈이 멀어 빛의 신비를 밝힐 수 없는 것을..

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death,
open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

만일 그대들이 진실로 죽음의 영혼을 볼 수 있다면,
생명의 몸을 향해 그대들의 마음을 활짝 열어라.
왜냐하면 강과 바다가 바로 하나인 것처럼 생명과 죽음도 하나이기에..

In the depth of your hopes and desires

lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

그대들의 희망과 욕망의 깊은 곳 속에 저쪽 세상의 말없는 깨달음이 누워있기에
그리고 마치 눈(雪)밑에서 꿈을 꾸는 씨앗처럼 그대들의 마음은 봄을 꿈꾼다.
꿈을 믿어라. 왜냐하면 그 꿈 안에 영원으로 가는 문이 숨겨져 있으니..

Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd
when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling,
that he shall wear the mark of the king?
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

그대들의 죽음에 대한 두려움은 자신 앞에 왕의 손길이 내려져

영광스럽게 왕앞에 서게 된 양치기의 떨림과 같은 것이니,

그 양치기는 왕의 은총을 입게 되었으니
떨림속에서도 기뻐하지 않겠는가?

그리고 그것에 더하여 자신의 떨림에 더욱 더 주의를
기울이지 않겠는가?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides,
that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

죽는다는 것은 무엇이겠는가?
그것이 그저 바람속에 벌거벗은 몸으로 서서 태양속으로 사라지는 것이 아니라면..
그리고 숨을 거둔다는 것은 무엇이겠는가?
그것은 다만 자기 자신의 끓임 없던 조수(潮水)의 물결로부터 벗어나

숨결이 자유로워짐이며
또한 날아 오르고 마음이 넓어져서 아무런 장애를 받지 않고

신(神)과 우주의 영혼을 찾아가는 것이 아니라면..

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

그리하여 그대들이 오직 침묵의 강물을 마실 때 진실한 노래를 부르게 되리라.
그리고 그대들이 산꼭대기에 도달했을 때 비로소 오르기를 시작하게 되고
대지가 그대의 손과 발을 요청할 때 그때에 그대는 진실로 춤추게 되리라.
